The Detective Training Program prides itself in the education and assessment of prospective detectives that will go on to learn and utilize a number of competencies across the department. The Detective Training program aims to develop subject-matter experts by assigning students to an available desk within any of the departments' geographical area detective divisions. Given a number of these desks are incredibly competitive, the training program enables detectives to prove their competence and expertise within their chosen primary field of investigation to desk supervisors, and ensure they are offered their assignment of choice upon successful completion of the training program.
Despite this, detectives are multiskilled and handle a range of investigations, many of which will be outside of their desks purview. To ensure detectives have developed a broad enough understanding of these areas of specialization to perform a thorough investigation should it be required of them, students are often assigned to a range of investigations and tasked with working alongside detectives and detective supervisors from all desks. Students are provided constant guidance and support from program coordinators, their peers, and mentors assigned from within the students' allocated desk.
1. APPLICATION
Once the respective requirements are met for one of the three available entry routes, a prospective student may submit a completed application form to the
Chief of Detectives
Prospective students may apply for the Detective Training Program by completing the provided form. Following notification of receipt, applicants will either be notified of denial, deferral until more slots are available, or invited to an interview. Delays may occur should coordinators receive a high volume of applications at one time.
All applicants are subject to a review of their performance evaluations, disciplinary records, individual character, and background. A history of investigative interest and application will be assessed through CCR and FIC contributions.
2. INTERVIEW
Upon successful application to the program, candidates will be invited for an interview with a program coordinator. This interview will provide coordinators with the necessary insight into an applicant's strengths, weaknesses, previous experience, motivations, and career aspirations. Coordinators may also delve into more personal aspects of a candidate's life to establish an understanding of their character, or provide resolution to elements of concern that arise during the preliminary background check. Applicants should receive a response within seventy-two (72) hours of the interview.
3. INDUCTION
Successful candidates will be invited to an induction or, in the absence of a coordinator, issued an induction package. During these first few days, the trainee will have a number of documents to observe, mostly pertaining to internal regulations, the structure of the program, their evaluation dates for both phases, as well as their learning goals for the entirety of the program. Furthermore, trainees shall be requested to provide an order of preference for their desk assignment, and upon being assigned, will be provided a mentor within their desk, who shall guide and support them throughout all aspects of the program, and allow the trainee to observe and contribute to their own on-going cases.
Trainees shall be provided with the necessary guidance and restrictions for their given entry route and will begin the program.
4. FIELD TRAINING, EVALUATION, AND EDUCATION
At this stage, the process varies somewhat depending on the students entry route, however for all students this phase consists of months of field training, case file management, both partnered and independent, and a number of scenario-based trainings and evaluations conducted in a controlled environment by coordinators and senior detectives.
Police Officers that meet the requirements for the Detective Trainee route are chosen on a case-by-case basis by coordinators. Detective Trainee Entry is typically for exceptional candidates, and those with proven competence and experience in the field. Theoretically, exceptional individuals who enter via this route may be able to conclude the program early, performance and completion of learning goals permitting.
((Sixty (60) days are afforded to all entry routes as a baseline. Depending on the progress of the trainee and other extraneous factors, a student may be granted an extension.))
5. GRADUATION CEREMONY
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be invited to a graduation ceremony. In the event of a small intake, this ceremony may be private. During it, students are officially graduated from the detective training program, where they will be provided with their Detective Qualification certificate and badge by the Chief of Detectives and/or program coordinators, at which point they are promoted to the rank of Detective I and assigned to a geographical area detective division and desk.
